Vinyl, Laminate and the Basement: Cheap Floors That Work, the Slab Underneath That Decides It, and the Prep Line Every Quote Leaves Out

The floors most houses get, priced honestly, with the moisture and flatness rules that make the difference between ten years and two.

Vinyl plank is the best thing to happen to basements since the sump pump, and it fails more often than any floor I see, for one reason: it went down on a slab nobody tested, over a floor nobody flattened. The plank is waterproof. The mould under it does not care. These pages cover what vinyl and laminate cost and how they compare, what belongs on a basement slab, how to test concrete and what to put between it and the floor, what levelling costs, and what the gaps and bounce in a floating floor are telling you.

The guides

Vinyl plank flooring cost

LVP, SPC and WPC by grade, click vs glue-down, attached pads, installed prices and what a $2 plank gets you.

Laminate vs vinyl plank

The two cheap floors compared honestly: water, feel underfoot, sound, repair, and where laminate still wins.

Best basement flooring

Slab moisture, cold, raised subfloor panels, LVP, tile and carpet, and what we put in our own basements.

Subfloor levelling cost

Flat vs level, self-levelling compound, grinding, plywood overlays, and who pays when the quote said “as required”.

Vinyl over concrete

Moisture testing, vapour retarders, and why “waterproof” planks grow mould underneath on an untested slab.

Floating floor problems

Gaps, bounce, buckling and peaking: what causes each, who is responsible, and what the fix costs.

Subfloor inspection checklist

What to check and photograph before the first plank goes down, so the warranty is yours and not the installer’s excuse.

Four rules for floors on concrete

  1. Test, do not guess. An in-slab probe at 75% RH or a calcium chloride test under 3 lb. A plastic sheet taped down for a day is the free version and better than nothing. Moisture.
  2. Flat to 3/16 in. in 10 ft, or the click joints break. A 10-ft straightedge and a flashlight find it in five minutes. Levelling.
  3. Leave the gap and break the run. A floating floor needs 1/4 to 3/8 in. at every wall and a T-mould every 30 to 40 ft. The buckle in July is the gap you did not leave. Problems.
  4. In a cold basement, lift the floor off the slab. A raised panel subfloor at $3.50 a foot is the difference between a rec room and a storage room. Basement floors.

Have quotes or plans in hand? Let a builder read them first

For $99, I put your flooring or tile quotes on one grid, check the square footage and waste against your rooms, name the product each one actually promised, price the tearout and subfloor work that was left as “extra”, check that a shower quote names a waterproofing system, and tell you which one to sign. For a new build or a basement, $249 turns your plans into a room-by-room takeoff of materials, stairs, subfloor notes and showers, with a budget by grade, that three installers can price the same way.
