Heat Pumps, Furnaces and Air Conditioning in Ontario (2026): Heat Pump Cost, Cold-Climate Units, Mini-Splits, Dual Fuel, Central Air, Furnace Replacement and Sizing
Heat Pumps, Furnaces and Air Conditioning: What Each One Costs, What It Does at Minus 25, and Why the Size on the Quote Matters More Than the Brand
Ducted and ductless heat pumps, dual fuel, central air and furnaces. Central Ontario installed prices, October 2026.
A heat pump is an air conditioner that also runs backwards, and a cold-climate one keeps heating well below minus 20. That makes it the default answer for a lot of Ontario houses now, but not all of them, and the arguments I hear are almost never about the right thing. The right thing is the heat loss of your house, the capacity of the unit at your design temperature, and what happens on the coldest night. Get those three right and the brand is a detail.
The numbers
Central Ontario, installed, before HST, checked October 2026. Published prices for the same job vary widely; these are the defaults the calculators use.
The guides
Heat pump cost in Ontario
Standard vs cold-climate ducted, the all-electric conversion, the new house, mini-splits, the electrical and three houses priced.
Cold-climate heat pumps at minus 25
Already on the site: what makes a unit cold-climate, whether it carries the house, and the three kinds of backup.
Ductless mini-split cost
Single zone by size, multi-zone, several singles against one multi, line sets, condensate and the cost per head.
Ducted vs ductless
Which one when: existing ducts, no ducts, radiant houses, closed bedrooms, comfort, noise and cost.
Dual fuel: heat pump plus furnace
How the switchover works, the economic balance point, the controls, the cost, and when it beats all-electric.
Gas vs heat pump operating cost
Already on the site: the arithmetic per delivered kWh, with your own rates.
Central air conditioning cost
AC by size, existing ducts against new, SEER2, the electrical, and why a heat pump now costs little more.
Furnace replacement cost
Repair or replace at 15 to 20 years, two-stage vs modulating, venting, the January premium, and the heat pump question.
HVAC sizing mistakes
Oversizing, sizing from square feet or the old furnace sticker, short-cycling, summer humidity, and what an ICF house needs.
Rules I give every customer
- Size it from a heat loss. Not the square footage, not the old furnace. OntarioHeatLoss.ca does the CSA F280.
- Read the capacity at minus 25, not at 8.3 C. The model number goes on the NRCan list and the low-temperature capacity goes on the quote. What cold-climate means.
- Plan the backup. Electric strips, the existing furnace, or a properly sized unit that barely needs either. Dual fuel.
- Check the ducts and the panel before the outdoor unit. Heat pumps want more airflow than old furnaces, and a 200 A service is not always there. 100 or 200 amp.
- Nobody sells you a furnace or an air conditioner at your door. In Ontario that contract is void unless you called them first. Who should be doing the work.
Have quotes in hand? Let a builder read them first
For $99, I put up to three heat pump, furnace, boiler, AC, HRV or water heater quotes on one grid: whether a heat loss was done, the model numbers checked against the cold-climate list, the capacity at your design temperature, what each one left out in dollars (ducts, electrical, condensate, venting, commissioning, the old unit), the rebate claim checked, and a plain answer on which to sign. No contractor behind it and no commission on who you hire.
