What Should Your Countertop Cost? Measure It Before the Fabricator Does.

An Ontario installed price for quartz, granite, quartzite, porcelain, laminate or butcher block, with the cutouts, edges and seams priced. No email address required.

A countertop quote is a short document with a lot of lines on it, and the lines are where the money hides. This works them out for you: area, material tier, thickness, edge, sink and cooktop cutouts, waterfall ends, removal of the old top, and HST. Then it hands you a written scope a fabricator can price without changing it.

Step-by-step

Countertop Cost Calculator (Ontario)

1

Measure the counters (in feet)

Add up every straight run, including over the dishwasher and the sink. Leave out the stove if it is a slide-in range.
Standard is 25.5 in. over 24 in. base cabinets with a 1.5 in. overhang.
Enter 0 if there is no island or peninsula.
A seating island is usually 36 to 42 in. deep. Over 60 in. may need a second slab.
Use this if a fabricator has already measured.
Full-height slab backsplash is the current fashion and roughly doubles the stone on the wall runs.
2

Material

Installed rate per square foot is shown in the result. Rates include templating, fabrication, delivery and installation.
2 cm saves 8 to 12% on stone and needs the laminated edge to look right. Not available for every material.
3

Edges, cutouts and extras

Estimated total with HST $0

Example only, using BuildersOntario budgeting rates checked October 2026. Rates include templating, fabrication, delivery and installation and allow for normal slab waste. Excludes the sink and faucet themselves, tile backsplash, cabinet levelling, and any electrical work. A fabricator’s written quotation after templating is the only binding number.

What this calculator does, and what it will not do!

It gives you an installed budget for a countertop in Ontario in today’s money, with the lines a fabricator will charge for priced separately so you can see where the money goes. It does not know your walls bow, that your old laminate is glued to the cabinets with something unholy, or that the slab you fell for at the showroom is a $160 one with a $105 name tag. A fabricator finds those things at templating. The point is that when they do, you know what the rest of the job should cost.

The rates are what I use to set a client’s countertop allowance, checked against fabricator quotes from the GTA, Simcoe County and London. Rates are per square foot installed and they already allow for the waste that comes from cutting an L-shaped kitchen out of a rectangular slab, which is how most Ontario fabricators price. A shop that quotes by the slab will come out a little different and neither of you is wrong.

A rule of thumb: a mid-tier quartz kitchen in Ontario runs $105 per square foot installed, and the average kitchen has 50 to 65 square feet of it. Call it $5,500 to $7,500 before HST, with a sink cutout and a plain edge. Everything on the quote beyond that is an upgrade, a cutout or a removal, and it should say so.

How I price it

Installed, per square foot of finished top, before HST, including template, fabrication, delivery and install, 3 cm unless noted.

MaterialPer sq ftWhat you are getting
Laminate, post-formed$45Rolled front edge and integral backsplash, from a sheet. Drop-in sink only. The cheapest honest top there is.
Laminate, custom square edge$65Square edge, can take an undermount sink with the right core. Looks like a $100 top from four feet away.
Solid surface$90Acrylic, seamless, repairable, integral sinks possible. Scratches, and the scratches sand out.
Butcher block$95Maple or oak, oiled. Warm and repairable. Not for around an undermount sink unless you like maintenance.
Granite, level 1$85Common colours, speckled, plentiful. Seal it once a year. The value stone in 2026.
Granite, level 2 and 3$120Exotic colours and big movement. Each slab is its own thing, which is the point and the price.
Quartz, builder tier$85Plain whites, greys and small-fleck patterns, often import brands. Perfectly good.
Quartz, mid tier$105Most of the pattern books from the Canadian and major import brands. The Ontario default.
Quartz, designer tier$135The big-name marble looks, book-matched veining, 2 cm options for waterfalls. You are paying for the pattern.
Quartzite$140Real stone that looks like marble and does not etch. Harder than granite, which is where the fabrication cost comes from.
Marble$125Beautiful, soft, etches from lemon juice. Buy it knowing that.
Soapstone$130Dark, matte, oiled, scratches and then forgives. For people who want a top with a history.
Porcelain or sintered slab$150Thin, heat-proof, stain-proof, hard to fabricate. Ask how many the shop has done. If the answer is under twenty, keep looking.

Rates checked October 2026. The calculator shows plus or minus 12% because two honest fabricators will not land on the same number. 2 cm stone takes 10% off the rate and adds a built-up edge. Edges, cutouts, waterfall ends ($1,200 each), removal ($500) and plumbing ($350) are priced as separate lines so you can see them.

Where homeowners go wrong

  1. Comparing a per-square-foot price to another per-square-foot price. One includes the sink cutout, edge and install. The other is the slab. Make every fabricator quote the written scope from this page, installed, and compare the bottom line.
  2. Templating before the cabinets are level and fixed. The fabricator templates to what is there. If the cabinets move after, the top does not fit, and that is your change order.
  3. Not asking where the seams go. A quartz slab is about 10 feet long. A 14-foot run has a seam. Ask to see it on the drawing before fabrication, not after install. Good shops put it where you will not look; bad shops put it where the cut is easiest.
  4. Buying the slab in the showroom light. Take a sample home and look at it next to the cabinet door in your own kitchen at night. The $135 pattern and the $85 pattern often look the same under your lights.
  5. Forgetting the plumber. The fabricator sets the top and leaves. Somebody reconnects the drain, the supply lines and the dishwasher, and it is usually not them. Budget it.
  6. Skipping the overhang support. Anything over 10 inches of unsupported stone needs steel. A 15-inch seating overhang on an island with no brackets is a crack waiting for a Thanksgiving.

What a fabricator needs from you to quote properly

The quotation request above hands them a written scope: square footage with the depth you measured, material and tier, thickness, edge profile, sink type, cooktop, faucet holes, waterfall ends, whether the old top is coming out, and your postal code and timing. That is enough for a good shop to give you a firm number subject to templating, and enough for you to compare three of them to the same question.

If you are in Simcoe County, Muskoka or the Georgian Bay area, the request comes to us. Everywhere else in Ontario, with your permission, we pass it to one fabricator we have checked out, never a list of five. The longer read on materials, seams and what the quote lines mean is in the Ontario countertop cost guide. If you are doing cabinets at the same time, the cabinet calculator prices both together.

Questions people ask

How much does a quartz countertop cost installed in Ontario in 2026?

Mid-tier quartz is about $105 per square foot installed, so a typical 55 square foot kitchen with one sink cutout runs $5,800 to $6,500 before HST. Builder-tier whites come in at $85; designer marble-look patterns at $135 and up. Waterfall ends, upgraded edges and removal of the old top are extra and should be on their own lines.

Is granite cheaper than quartz now?

Level 1 granite, yes, at $85 against $105 for mid quartz. Fashion moved to quartz and granite got cheaper. It needs sealing once a year, which takes ten minutes, and it takes a hot pot better than quartz does.

What is included in the per-square-foot price?

At a reputable Ontario shop: template, the stone, fabrication, a plain edge, delivery and installation. Usually included: one sink cutout. Usually extra: upgraded edges, cooktop cutouts, waterfall ends, removal of the old top, plumbing reconnect, and anything over about 10 inches of overhang. Ask which of those are in the number before comparing it to anyone else’s.

2 cm or 3 cm?

Three centimetres is the Ontario standard and the safe choice; it spans a dishwasher opening without support and takes any edge profile. Two centimetres saves about 10% on the stone, needs a laminated (doubled) front edge to look like 3 cm, and is the usual choice for a waterfall end so the mitre is lighter. Not every material or pattern is stocked in 2 cm.

How long does it take?

Template after the cabinets are set and level, then five to ten working days to fabrication and install for quartz or granite from a busy Ontario shop. Porcelain and exotic quartzite take longer. You will be without a sink for that week, so plan for it.

Is the estimate an offer or a price?

Neither. It is a budgeting allowance so you walk into the conversation informed. Only a fabricator’s written quotation after templating is a price.

Before you sign anything

Three installed quotes on the same scope. The seam on the drawing before the saw starts. A sample at home under your own lights. And a plumber booked for the day after.
