The installed price by distance and panel, and the yearly charging cost on your hydro plan against gasoline. No email address required.

A Level 2 charger in Ontario costs anywhere from about $1,000 to $3,500 installed, and the spread is almost all about two things: how far the garage is from the panel, and whether the panel can carry it. A short run in an unfinished basement to an attached garage is the cheap job. A 25 m run through finished ceilings to a detached garage on a 100 A service is the dear one. This calculator prices your version, then shows what you save charging overnight.

Your driving and your rates

Ontario average driving is often quoted around 15,000 to 20,000 km.
About 18 to 20 for most cars in mixed driving; more for trucks and in winter.
Supply prices from November 1, 2026: ULO overnight 3.7 cents, TOU off-peak 9.1, tiered 11.2. All-in adds delivery and regulatory charges; your bill total divided by kWh is your real number.
Only used if you pick your own rate.
Most compact SUVs 8 to 10.

Example only. Installed prices are October 2026 Ontario ranges before HST: a standard install about $1,300 plus the charger, extra distance past 10 m at about $110 a metre (the middle of $75 to $150), and the add-ons shown. ESA’s notification fee for an EV charger is $86 at the contractor rate. Charging energy includes about 10 percent lost in charging. No Ontario rebate for home chargers in 2026. Not a quote.

Request a Real Quotation

Your panel, the distance and where the charger goes become a written scope a Licensed Electrical Contractor can quote without a second visit. It goes straight to our inbox, and a copy comes back to you; reply to that copy with photos of the panel with the door open and the label inside the door, the meter, and the wall where the charger goes.

What a Level 2 install costs in Ontario, October 2026

JobBefore HST
Standard install with the charger, 200 A panel, short run$1,500 to $2,800
Install only, you supply the charger$500 to $2,000
Extra distance past about 10 m$75 to $150 a metre
Through finished walls or ceilingsadd $300 to $800
Detached garage with a trenchadd $400 to $2,000
EV load manager (EVEMS) on a 100 A service$750 to $1,500
100 A to 200 A service upgrade, overhead$2,500 to $5,000
EV-ready circuit in a new house at rough-in$750 to $1,200
ESA notification fee, EV charger (contractor rate)$86
Why Ontario prices are all over the map: the contractors and price guides we checked put a Level 2 install at $800 to $2,000 (a national home-services marketplace), $1,500 to $2,800 with the charger (a Toronto EV installer), and $900 to $1,500 for an easy job up to $3,000 to $5,000 for a complex one (an Ottawa contractor). Whether the charger is in the price and how far the garage is from the panel are most of the gap. Budget about $2,000 for a standard job with the charger, and get two or three quotes on the same written scope.

What charging costs, on the November 2026 rates

At 20,000 km a year and 19 kWh per 100 km, plus about 10 percent lost in charging, a car needs about 4,180 kWh a year. On the ultra-low overnight plan, at about 9 cents a kWh all in, that is about $376. On time-of-use off-peak at about 15 cents it is about $627. A gasoline SUV at 8.5 L per 100 km burns 1,700 L; at $1.40 a litre, $2,380. The overnight supply price itself is 3.7 cents; the rest of the 9 cents is delivery and regulatory charges, which is why your own bill total divided by your kWh is the number to use.

The ultra-low overnight plan’s catch is the on-peak price, 37.7 cents from 4 to 9 pm on weekdays. A house that runs the dryer, the oven and a heat pump hard at supper can lose on the day what it saves at night. Look at a year of your hourly data before you switch; your utility shows it online.

Where homeowners go wrong

  1. Upgrading the service for a charger a load manager would handle. EV on 100 A.
  2. Buying the biggest charger. 32 A adds about 40 km of range an hour; most cars fill overnight.
  3. A 14-50 receptacle on a plug-in charger without asking the electrician about a receptacle rated for the duty. Hardwired is usually the better answer for a charger that stays.
  4. Hiring a handyman. The installer must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor and file the ESA notification. How to hire one.
  5. Not roughing it in on a new house. Cost to wire a house.
