Double vs. Triple Pane Windows in Ontario: The Real Energy Saving, the Comfort You Can Feel, the Noise, and a Payback You Should Not Lie to Yourself About
Triple Glazing: Worth It for Comfort, Quiet and Dry Glass. Not Worth It for the Gas Bill. Here Is the Arithmetic.
Every window salesman has a heat lamp and a sample that proves triple glass is warmer. It is. The question is what that is worth, and the gas bill is the wrong place to look. A modern double-glazed Low-E argon window is already a good window; triple moves it from good to better by a third, on the glass, which is a quarter of what a house loses. Here is the math, then the reasons that are not math.
The numbers
What is in each one
Double: two panes, one Low-E coating on the inside face of the outer pane, argon in the gap, a warm-edge spacer. Whole-window U-factor around 1.1 to 1.4 W/m2K depending on frame; Energy Rating in the high 20s to mid 30s. This is what ENERGY STAR for Canada means in practice, and it is the base window on every quote in this section.
Triple: three panes, two Low-E coatings, argon in both gaps (krypton in the thin ones on premium units), same spacer. Whole-window U-factor around 0.8 to 1.0; Energy Rating in the high 30s to mid 40s. Fifty percent heavier. Centre-of-glass numbers are better than those; ignore centre-of-glass, nobody certifies it. What the ratings are.
The energy arithmetic, honestly
Take a 1,800 sq ft Ontario house with 220 sq ft of window, gas heat, 4,000 heating degree days. Heat loss through the glass at U 1.15 is roughly 220 sq ft times 1.15 times the degree-day temperature difference, which comes to about 7,000 kWh of heat a year through the windows. At U 0.85, about 5,200. The 1,800 kWh difference is about 65 m3 of gas at a furnace’s efficiency, or around $60 to $80 a year at 2026 Ontario rates; a bit more with an electric furnace, a bit less with a heat pump. Against $2,700 to $4,500 extra on 15 to 25 windows, that is a payback measured in decades. Anyone who tells you triple glazing pays for itself in five years is selling triple glazing.
What does pay back faster is the attic. The attic insulation page is the one to read before this one if the goal is the bill.
The reasons that are not arithmetic
- The glass is warmer to sit beside. At minus 20 outside, the inside face of double glass is around 8 to 10 C; triple, 13 to 15 C. You feel the difference as a draft that is not a draft, in the chair by the window. That is the comfort the heat lamp was trying to show you.
- No condensation at normal humidity. Warmer glass stays above the dew point longer. A house at 35% humidity in January that fogs double glass every night does not fog triple. The condensation page has the chart.
- Quiet. Three panes, ideally with one a different thickness, take 3 to 5 dB off road noise compared with double. Noticeable on a busy road, not life-changing. Noise has the honest version.
- Big north and east glass. A 60 sq ft picture window on a north wall is where triple glazing is the whole comfort of the room. South glass gets free solar heat and the case is weaker.
- A heat pump house. Lower design heat loss can mean a smaller heat pump and no backup strip heat. Here the window upgrade saves money on the equipment, which is the one place the payback gets short. Run the heat loss before deciding.
Where triple glazing is the wrong answer
- Builder-grade vinyl casements: the weight sags the hinges in year ten. Triple belongs in a frame that can carry it.
- South-facing glass with a low solar gain coating: you have paid extra to block the free heat. Ask for a high-gain Low-E on south triple units, or stay with double there.
- A budget that has to choose between triple glass and foam at the perimeter. Foam first. Air leakage around a window loses more than the glass ever will.
- Rooms you are trying to keep daylit: three panes and two coatings take 10 to 15% of the visible light.
Where homeowners go wrong
- Buying triple for the gas bill. Buy it for the chair by the window, or do not buy it.
- Comparing a triple quote to a double quote. $3,000 of the difference is glass. The grid has a line for it.
- Taking “triple” as a spec. Triple with one coating and air fill is barely better than good double. Two coatings, argon, warm-edge spacer, and the certified number on the quote.
- Getting the “free upgrade to triple” at the kitchen table. It was never free. The tactics.
Questions people ask
Are triple-pane windows worth it in Ontario?
For comfort, condensation and noise on north and east glass, and in a heat-pump house, yes. For the energy bill alone, no; the payback is decades.
How much more do triple-pane windows cost?
$150 to $250 per standard window installed, more on big units. On a 15-window house, $2,500 to $4,000 before HST.
Do triple-pane windows stop condensation?
They raise the glass temperature so it fogs at a higher humidity than double does. At 50% indoor humidity in January, even triple glass will fog; the fix is the humidity.
What is a good U-factor for windows in Ontario?
1.22 W/m2K or better is ENERGY STAR for Canada. Good double is 1.1 to 1.2; good triple is 0.8 to 1.0. Under 0.8 is the top of the market.
Price it with and without
The calculator switches the whole package to triple with one menu. Put triple on the north and east bedrooms and the big picture window, double everywhere else, and compare.
