Drywall Taping Cost Calculator Ontario (2026): Level 3, 4 or 5 Finishing on Hung Board, Corners, Ceilings and Sanding, With HST
What Should Taping Cost? The Board Is Up; This Prices the Part That Decides Whether the Walls Look Good in Sunlight.
Level 3, 4 or 5 by the Gypsum Association definitions, corners and bead, ceilings you need a plank for, and the sanding. HST on the bottom. No email address required.
Hanging drywall is carpentry. Taping is closer to plastering, and it is the trade that gets blamed for everything: the seam that shows at 4 p.m. in March, the corner that is not quite straight, the screw that popped in year two. Good tapers are worth more than their rate, and the rate is not high. This calculator prices the finishing on its own, for the homeowner who hung the board, the builder who buys the trades separately, or anyone trying to understand why one quote said Level 4 and the other said nothing.

Drywall Taping and Finishing Cost Calculator (Ontario)
The rooms with board already hung
| Room | Length (ft) | Width (ft) | Ceiling (ft) | Doors | Windows | Ceiling |
|---|
Measure each room at the floor. Doors come off at 20 sq ft each, windows at 15. Closets count as rooms if they are drywalled; hallways too. A 2,000 sq ft house has about 6,500 sq ft of wall and ceiling, not 2,000.

Example only, using BuildersOntario budgeting rates checked October 2026 for taping and finishing to Gypsum Association GA-214 levels: paper tape on flats and inside corners, bead on outside corners, all-purpose or lightweight compound, fastener heads coated, sanded, and the floor swept. Level 5 is a full skim coat over the Level 4 surface, not a primer-surfacer. Does not include hanging, priming or painting. Your contractor’s site look governs the contract.

Your room list and finish levels become a written scope a taper can price from, so three of them price the same job and name the same level. It goes straight to our inbox, and a copy comes back to you; reply to that copy with two photos of the hung board, one of a typical joint and one of a corner.
What this calculator does, and what it will not do!
It prices the finishing only: the tape, the three coats, the bead, the sanding, to the level you pick for walls and the level you pick for ceilings, because they do not have to be the same. It counts outside corners, because a basement full of bulkheads is a different job from a square bedroom. And it is honest about hanging quality, because a taper who walks into a homeowner-hung job with half-inch gaps is going to charge for the extra compound and the extra day, or quit.
It does not know whether your framing is straight. No amount of compound fixes a stud that is 1/2 in. proud, and a Level 5 skim coat on a wavy wall is $1 a square foot spent making the wave smoother. Why seams show explains which problems are the taper’s and which were there before he arrived.
How I price it
| Line | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Level 3 | $1.00 per sq ft | Tape embedded, two coats over joints and fasteners, no polish. Garages, mechanical rooms, behind tile and heavy texture. |
| Level 4 | $1.50 per sq ft | Three coats, sanded smooth. The standard for painted walls with flat or eggshell paint. The cost guide. |
| Level 5 | $2.50 per sq ft | Level 4 plus a skim coat over the entire surface so the paper and the compound take paint the same way. For ceilings, sidelit walls, dark colours and any sheen above eggshell. |
| Outside corners | $9 each | Metal or vinyl bead, nailed or glued, two coats over. Arches and bullnose are double. |
| Fixing poor hanging | +$0.25 to $0.60 per sq ft | Setting proud screws, prefilling gaps, floating butt joints that were not staggered. |
| Tall and cathedral ceilings | +$0.35 to $0.75 per sq ft | Scaffold or a plank and a lot of climbing. |
| Occupied house | +15% | Dust walls, protection, working around the family and the furniture. |
| Dust control | $250 to $600 | Vacuum sanders and poly walls, or full containment with a negative-air machine for a renovation with the family at home. |
| Minimum job | $900 | One room is still three visits. |
Where homeowners go wrong
- Accepting “paint-ready” as a specification. It is not one. Level 4 is. Here are the levels; put the number in the contract.
- Paying for Level 5 in the closets. Upgrade the ceilings, the great-room walls with the big window, and anything getting a dark or semi-gloss colour. Leave the bedrooms at Level 4 and spend the difference on the paint.
- Checking the walls at noon. Check them with a work light held flat to the wall, or at 4 p.m. with the sun coming in low. That is how you will see them every winter afternoon for the next 30 years. The inspection checklist.
- Priming before the taper is finished. The primer coat is when the defects show, and the taper should still be on the job to fix them. Agree on that in advance. Who fixes what.
- Rushing the coats. Compound that is not dry shrinks under the next coat and cracks later. Three days is normal; one day with a heater and a fan is a callback.
Questions people ask
How much does drywall taping cost per square foot in Ontario?
$1.40 to $1.90 per square foot of board for Level 4 in 2026, before HST, with the board already hung. Level 5 is $2.25 to $2.75. Labour is most of it; compound and tape are about $0.15 a square foot.
Is Level 5 worth it?
On ceilings and on walls lit from the side, yes, especially with pot lights, dark colours or anything glossier than eggshell. On a bedroom wall with flat paint, you will not see the difference. The full comparison.
Can I hang the board myself and hire a taper?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Use 12-ft sheets where you can, stagger the butt joints, set the screws just below the paper without breaking it, and keep the joints tight. Tell the taper you hung it; he will look before he prices, and the honest ones will tell you what it adds.
How long does taping take?
A 2,000 sq ft house is about a week for a two-man crew: tape and bed day one, second coat day two or three, third coat, then sanding after that dries. Humidity in the house slows it down. A dehumidifier is cheaper than a callback.
Need the board hung, or painted after?
The drywall installation calculator prices supply and hanging with the taping, and the Complete Interior Finishing Calculator carries the same rooms through primer and paint.
