The cheapest part of the exterior and the one that does the most damage when it is wrong: a starved attic, an overflowing trough, a fascia board that is a sponge under a brown cover.

Eaves are quoted by the linear foot and the foot hides the depth of the soffit, the condition of the board behind the fascia, and whether the soffit lets the attic breathe. A trough that is too small or too empty of downspouts overflows backward and soaks the fascia; a solid soffit over a vented attic bakes the shingles and builds ice dams; and aluminum capping over a wet board keeps it wet for twenty years. Four rules for eaves

  1. Probe the fascia before it is capped. Soft board comes out at $18 a foot now, or at $18 a foot plus the rafter tails in ten years. Rot.
  2. Vent the soffit and keep the baffles clear. Half the attic air comes in at the eave. Vented vs solid and the roofing section’s attic ventilation.
  3. One downspout per 40 ft of run and per 600 sq ft of roof. Then six feet out from the wall. Sizing.
  4. State the soffit depth on every quote. 100 ft at 12 in. and 100 ft at 36 in. are the same “100 feet” and three times the material. Costs by depth.
