What Does My Water Actually Need? Start From the Test, Not the Salesman.

Your bacteria result and lab numbers in, the treatment train out, in the usual order, with October 2026 Ontario prices. No email address required.

A lot of water treatment in rural Ontario is sold before anybody tests the water. A dealer runs a hardness strip at the kitchen sink, mentions the word “arsenic”, and quotes a five-stage system. Sometimes that is right. Often half of it is for water you do not have. This selector reads your actual results against the Health Canada guidelines and builds the shortest train that fixes what is there.

Step-by-step

Example only. Guideline values from Health Canada (December 2025) and Ontario. Installed prices are the middle of researched October 2026 Ontario ranges before HST, then HST added; upkeep is salt, lamps and filters at about the middle of the researched ranges (the sediment and iron filter figures are our allowance). Thresholds marked “rule of thumb” are general practice, not limits. A dealer should size every piece from your lab report and put it in writing. Not a quote and not medical advice.

Your results and the train become a written scope a water treatment dealer or plumber can price without selling you equipment your water does not need. It goes straight to our inbox, and a copy comes back to you; reply to that copy with your lab report and bacteria result, and photos of any equipment already installed.

Iron, manganese and sulphur filter$1,000 to $4,500$2,500$150

UV disinfection$700 to $2,600$1,500$130 lamp
Reverse osmosis, kitchen tap$300 to $1,500$900$175 filters

Ontario, October 2026, before HST. Ranges from Ontario water treatment dealers and a national renovation marketplace. The sediment and iron filter upkeep figures are our allowance; no published media replacement price was found.

Why Ontario prices are all over the map: the dealers and price guides we checked for this page quoted very different prices for the same equipment. Softeners ran $800 to $3,000 from four Ontario dealers and $1,500 to $4,500 from a national renovation marketplace. A full rural package ran $2,500 to $5,500 from a GTA dealer, $3,000 to $9,500 and up from a Simcoe-area dealer and $6,000 to $11,000 and up from another Ontario dealer. Grain size, twin tanks, a new drain run and pieces you may not need move it. Budget the selector’s total and get two or three quotes on the same written scope.

The order matters

  1. Sediment first. Sand and silt wreck everything downstream.
  2. Iron, manganese and sulphur next. They foul softener resin and coat a UV sleeve. Iron filter or softener.
  3. Then the softener. A salt-powered swap shop, not a filter. Softener cost.
  4. UV last. It needs clear water to work, and it does nothing for chemicals. UV for well water.
  5. RO at the kitchen tap for the health-limit chemicals in drinking water. RO or carbon.

Questions people ask

Why will the selector not recommend anything without a bacteria test?

Because bacteria is the one result that decides whether the water is safe to drink, the test is free, and no softener or filter fixes a well that lets surface water in. Test first. Well water testing.

Where do I get the chemistry tested?

At a licensed private lab, for a fee; a general chemistry and metals package runs about $100 to $400 depending on what is in it. Public health tests bacteria only.

Does a softener make water safe?

No. It removes hardness. It does nothing for bacteria, nitrate, arsenic or uranium, and it adds a little sodium.

A dealer offered to test my water for free at the kitchen sink. Is that enough?

It is a sales tool, not a lab report. It can show hardness and iron roughly. It cannot tell you about bacteria or the health-limit chemicals, and Ontario bans door-to-door contracts for softeners and filters unless you asked them to come. Have the quote reviewed.

A treatment quote on the table?

The $99 quote review reads up to three treatment quotes, or one quote plus your lab report, and tells you what your water needs and what is upsell.
