Window Types, Frames, Glass and Performance: Vinyl vs. Fibreglass, Double vs. Triple, Styles, Low-E, Ratings, Black Frames and Noise
Frames, Glass, Styles and the Numbers on the Label: What the Words on a Window Quote Mean, and Which Ones Are Worth Paying For
What each choice costs installed, what it does through an Ontario winter, and the words on the quote that tell you which window you are actually being sold.
Eighty percent of Ontario houses get white vinyl casements and sliders with double Low-E argon glass, and for most of them that is right. The other choices, fibreglass, triple, black, laminated glass, are each right on some openings and wasted on others, and your house has both kinds. These pages are about which is which, with the price of each.
The numbers
Installed, Ontario, retrofit, before HST, for a standard 36 by 48 opening. Checked October 2026.

| Same, triple glazed | $1,280 | North and east bedrooms, big picture windows, beside a road |
| Fibreglass casement | $1,450 | Big openings, dark colours, south and west, heavy triple units |
| Vinyl slider | $850 | Wide low openings, basements, garages, the budget |

Casement, slider, hung, awning or fixed
Which opens best, seals best, cleans easiest and costs least, room by room.
Low-E glass explained
Hard and soft coat, high gain and low gain, argon, spacers, and which glass goes on which wall.
U-factor and Energy Rating
What the numbers mean, what a good one is in Ontario, and why centre-of-glass is not the window.
Black window frames
Laminate vs. paint vs. fibreglass, the heat problem on south walls, and the colour warranty.
Windows for noise
Laminated glass, triple pane, STC ratings, and the air gap that undoes all of it.
How I spec a house, if you want the short version
- Good vinyl, 4-in. welded frame, from an Ontario maker’s good series, on most openings. Which series.
- Fibreglass on the big south and west units and on anything black that faces the sun. Why.
- Triple on the north and east bedrooms and the big north glass. Double everywhere else. The arithmetic.
- High-gain Low-E on the south, low-gain on the west, same price, specified by wall. The coatings.
- Casements in bedrooms, a fixed-and-casement combination in the living room, awnings in bathrooms, sliders in the basement. Room by room.
- The certified U-factor and ER on the quote for every unit, or no quote. The numbers.
The calculators
Window replacement cost calculator
Every opening on its own line by type and size, vinyl or fibreglass, double or triple, retrofit, full-frame or new construction, doors on the same sheet, HST on the bottom. Writes the schedule for three quotes.
Exterior door cost calculator
Steel or fibreglass entry doors with sidelights, transoms, glass and locks; sliding, French and 8-ft patio doors; the wall, the floor and the finishing. The whole system, installed.
Have quotes or plans in hand? Let a builder read them first
For $99, I read your window and door quotes against your openings and send back what is missing, where the price is out of line with October 2026 Ontario rates, and the questions to ask before you sign. For a new build, $249 turns your plans into a checked window and door schedule three manufacturers can quote the same way. The quote review and the schedule takeoff.
