Drywall Repair Cost in Ontario (2026): Holes, Cracks, Screw Pops and Ceilings by Size, the Minimum Charge Explained, Who to Call, and the Blending Question
What Drywall Repairs Cost in Ontario, Why the Minimum Is $250 to $350, and the Question Nobody Asks Until After: Who Paints It?
A Toronto homeowner posted a photo of a doorknob hole and a $350 quote and asked whether he was being robbed. He was not. A drywall patch is a visit to cut, back and tape it, a visit to second-coat it, a visit to sand and prime it, and then it is a grey rectangle on a beige wall until somebody paints the wall. The contractor is pricing three trips and an hour of driving each way, and that is before paint. Here is what the common repairs cost, why the minimum is what it is, who actually wants the small jobs, and the test that comes first in any house older than 1990.
The numbers
| Repair | First one | Each extra, same visit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small patch, under 6 in. (doorknob, anchor, dent) | $300 | $90 | Mesh or paper patch, three coats, primed. |
| Large patch, to 2 x 2 ft (plumber’s hole, removed vent) | $550 | $250 | Cut square, backing strips, new board, taped. |
| Ceiling patch, to 2 x 2 ft | $600 | $300 | Overhead and the light will find it. |
| Full-sheet replacement | $750 wall, $950 ceiling | same | After a plumber, an electrician or a flood. |
| Water-damaged ceiling | $900 minimum, about $14 per sq ft | After the leak is fixed and the cavity is dry. In order. | |
| Crack over 12 in. | $120 | $120 | Cut, tape, three coats. Recurring cracks need the cause fixed. Which cracks. |
| Screw pops | $150 for ten | $10 each | New screw beside, old one set, three coats. |
| Blend paint over the patch area, your paint | $250 a room | Works on flat paint within a year. Otherwise it flashes. | |
| Repaint the wall or ceiling corner to corner, paint supplied | $650 a room | The repair that disappears. | |
| Asbestos test, pre-1990 | $150 | Before sanding anything. Why. | |
| Minimum visit | $250 | The drive and the setup. |
Why the minimum
Compound shrinks as it dries. The first coat fills the patch and shrinks; the second coat fills the shrinkage and shrinks less; the third coat finishes it. Each has to dry, which is overnight, and a setting compound (the hot mud the professionals use) only gets you to two visits, not one. Then sanding, which is dust, which is protection and cleanup. Then primer, because fresh compound flashes under paint. That is a minimum of two trips and usually three, for a hole the size of a fist, and the contractor charges for the trips. A repair specialist who lives in your town and batches repairs can do a small patch for $250; a drywall crew that boards houses will quote $500 because they would rather not come.
Who to call
- A drywall repair specialist. They exist in every city and most towns, they own a van full of patches and setting compound, and small jobs are their business. Search for “drywall repair” rather than “drywall contractor”.
- A good handyman. Fine for patches and pops, and he will paint it too. Ask whether he uses setting compound and paper tape; if he says “the pink stuff”, he is a weekend taper.
- A painter. Most painters do small repairs as part of the prep and the painting is already in the price. For a room that is getting painted anyway, this is the cheapest route.
- A drywall contractor. For a water-damaged ceiling, a full room, or anything over a few sheets. Not for a doorknob.
- An abatement contractor if the test comes back positive. Not a handyman, whatever he says.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to fix a hole in drywall in Ontario?
$250 to $350 for a small hole, finished and primed, in 2026, and $500 to $800 for one up to 2 ft square. Then $250 to $650 to paint it so it disappears. Extras on the same visit are much cheaper, so collect them.
Can I patch drywall myself?
Small holes, yes: a self-adhesive mesh patch, setting compound, two more thin coats of all-purpose, sand, prime, paint. Watch somebody do it first and buy a 6-in. and a 10-in. knife. Ceilings and anything over a foot square are worth the $500.
Why does a small repair cost so much?
Three visits for the three coats to dry, plus the drive, plus sanding and primer, plus protection and cleanup in a lived-in house. The hole is not the cost; the visits are.
Does a drywall patch show after painting?
Painted only over the patch, nearly always, because the fresh paint flashes against the old. Painted corner to corner on the wall, no. Budget for the wall.
