Paper Tape vs Mesh Tape: Which Cracks, Which Bubbles, Which Needs Setting Compound, and What a Professional Taper Uses Where

Paper Tape or Mesh Tape? Why the Professionals Use Paper, Why the Hardware Store Sells Mesh, and the One Place Each Belongs

Walk into any building supply and the drywall tape at eye level is self-adhesive fibreglass mesh, because it is easy: stick it on, mud over it, done. Walk onto any job where a professional taper is working and there is a 500-ft roll of paper tape in his pouch and the mesh is in the truck for patches. The difference is strength under tension. Paper does not stretch; mesh does, a little, and that little is a hairline crack down the joint in a year unless the compound over it is the hard-setting kind. Here is what each is for.

The two tapes

Paper tapeFibreglass mesh tape
What it isHeavy paper, creased down the middle, not adhesive. Bedded in a coat of compound.Open fibreglass weave with a sticky back. Applied dry to the board.
Strength along the jointHigh. Does not stretch. The joint moves as one piece.Lower. Stretches slightly under tension, which shows as a crack through drying or ordinary compound.
Compound it needsAny: all-purpose, lightweight, or setting.Setting-type (the powder you mix, “hot mud”) for the first coat, to lock the mesh. All-purpose over mesh cracks.
Inside cornersFolds on the crease into a sharp, straight corner. The only sensible choice. Will not fold cleanly; rounds the corner and cracks.
Flat and butt jointsStandard.Works with setting compound; slightly thicker joint.
SpeedSlower: bed coat, press, wipe. Skill required to avoid bubbles.Faster: stick and coat. The reason it is sold to homeowners.
Patches and small repairsFine, fussy on a small patch.Ideal. Self-adhesive over a hole, setting compound, done.
Cement board jointsNo. Paper and thinset do not mix.Yes, the alkali-resistant kind, with thinset.

Why paper bubbles, and how a taper stops it

The only real complaint about paper tape is bubbling: a spot where the tape did not get enough compound under it, dries loose, and shows as a blister that peels. It is always the bed coat. The tape goes into a generous coat of compound and gets pressed down with a 6-in. knife firmly enough that compound squeezes out both sides, so there is a continuous layer behind it. Thin the first coat a little, do not scrape it too dry, and the tape never bubbles. A taper who bubbles tape is in a hurry. The fix for an existing bubble is to cut it out with a knife, bed a new piece, and recoat; it does not get better on its own and it does not get hidden by paint. Tape bubbles.

What a professional does

  1. Paper on every flat joint and every inside corner. Bedded in all-purpose, or in setting compound where the joint is wide or the schedule is tight.
  2. Mesh for patches and for prefilling a gap that was too wide, under a setting compound that will not shrink.
  3. Setting compound (hot mud) for the bed coat and the prefill on butt joints and bad gaps, because it dries hard in 45 or 90 minutes and does not shrink. All-purpose or lightweight for the second and third coats, because they sand.
  4. Metal, vinyl or paper-faced bead on outside corners, and the paper-faced composite tapes (Strait-Flex and similar) on off-angle corners such as cathedral ceilings, where paper alone cracks. Corners and beads.
  5. Nothing but alkali-resistant mesh and thinset on cement board, and that is the tile setter’s job, not the taper’s.

Questions people ask

Is paper or mesh drywall tape better?

Paper, for flat joints and inside corners, because it does not stretch and the joint stays closed. Mesh is for patches, cement board and quick repairs, and it must be coated with setting-type compound to avoid cracking.

Why does mesh tape crack?

Fibreglass mesh stretches slightly, and ordinary all-purpose compound is brittle over it; any movement in the joint shows as a hairline crack along the tape. Setting compound locks the mesh and mostly prevents it, which is why the instructions on the roll say to use it and almost nobody reads them.

Can you use mesh tape on inside corners?

You can, and you will get a rounded, cracked corner. Paper tape creased down the middle is the only tape that makes a straight inside corner.

What is the best tape for a drywall patch?

Self-adhesive mesh, with a setting compound first coat, then all-purpose. For a patch it is faster than paper and strong enough. Repairs.

The tape is cheap; the taper is not

The taping cost guide has what the labour costs, and the inspection checklist includes a look at every inside corner before primer, which is where mesh tape gives itself away.
