Drywall Taping Cost in Ontario (2026): Per Square Foot by Finish Level, What Three Coats and Three Visits Really Cost, and Why Cheap Taping Is Expensive
What Drywall Taping Costs in Ontario, and Why the Fellow at $0.90 a Foot Is Going to Cost You the Paint Job
Taping is about half the cost of a finished drywall job and all of the appearance. The board is a commodity; the taper is the trade. In Ontario in 2026 a good one charges $1.40 to $1.90 a square foot to take hung board to Level 4, and there is always somebody at $0.90 who will do it in two coats, sand it on day two and be gone before the primer shows what he left. This page is the real price, what it buys, and the three jobs I priced this month.
The numbers
| Line | Rate | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| Level 3 | $1.00 per sq ft | Tape embedded, two coats over joints and fasteners, light sand. For garages, utility rooms, behind heavy texture or tile. The levels. |
| Level 4 | $1.50 per sq ft | Three coats, each wider, fasteners three coats, sanded smooth. The standard for painted walls in flat or eggshell. |
| Level 5 | $2.50 per sq ft | Level 4 plus a skim coat over the entire surface. Ceilings, sidelit walls, dark and sheen paint. 4 vs 5. |
| Outside corners | $9 each | Bead supplied, fastened, two coats over. Arches and bullnose double. Corners. |
| Fixing the hanging | +$0.25 to $0.60 per sq ft | Proud screws, gaps over 1/4 in., unstaggered butt joints, broken paper. The taper prices it when he looks. |
| Over 9 ft 6 in., cathedral | +$0.35 to $0.75 per sq ft | Scaffold, stilts, the plank over the stairs. |
| Occupied house | +15% | Dust walls, floor protection, three visits around a family. |
| Dust control | $250 to $600 | Vacuum sanding and poly, or full containment with a negative-air machine. Dust. |
| Minimum | $900 | One room is still three visits and the setup. |
What the price buys: the three visits
Day one, tape and bed. Paper tape pressed into a bed of compound on every flat joint and inside corner, bead on the outside corners, a first coat over every screw head, and the butt joints prefilled. In a 2,000 sq ft house this is a long day for two men.
Day two or three, the fill coat. After the first coat dries, a wider coat over everything, a 10- or 12-in. knife on the flats, the butt joints feathered out 18 to 24 in. to hide the hump. This is the coat that decides whether the joint shows.
Day four or five, the finish coat and sanding. A thin, wide third coat, dried, then sanded with a pole sander or a vacuum sander, inside corners by hand. Level 5 adds a fourth visit for the skim coat and a fifth for sanding it. Compound dries in 24 hours at 20 degrees and 50% humidity; in a new house in November with no heat it can take three days a coat, and the taper who tries to speed it up with a salamander heater is drying the surface and leaving the middle soft.

Where homeowners go wrong
- Taking the cheap quote without asking how many coats. Ask. Then ask how many days. The arithmetic does not work for three coats at $0.90.
- Not naming the level. “Finished” is not a level. Level 4 is. Write it down. The contract.
- Paying in full before the primer. Hold 10% until the painter has primed and the taper has fixed what the primer showed. That is what holdback is for. Who fixes what.
- Heating a cold house with a propane salamander to dry the mud. It puts a gallon of water into the air for every gallon of propane. Electric heat and a dehumidifier, or wait.
- Hiring a taper who does not own a 12-in. knife. Watch for it. A 6-in. knife on a butt joint leaves a hump you can see from the driveway.
Questions people ask
How much does drywall taping cost per square foot in Ontario?
$1.40 to $1.90 per square foot of board for Level 4 in 2026, before HST, with the board hung. Level 3 about $1.00, Level 5 $2.25 to $2.75. Materials are about $0.15 of that; the rest is a skilled trade’s time over three visits.
How much to tape a 12×12 room?
About 500 sq ft of surface, so $750 at Level 4, which is also about the minimum any taper will come out for. If you have two rooms, do them together.
Is taping included in a drywall quote?
Only if it says so. “Supply and install” often means hung, not taped. “Supply, install and finish to Level 4” is the whole job. The grid.
Can I tape drywall myself?
You can learn to do a closet. A whole house takes a professional about a week and an amateur about a month, and the result is visible for thirty years. Hang it yourself if you want to save money; hire the taping.
Price your own taping
The taping calculator prices walls and ceilings at different levels, counts the corners and asks about the hanging. If you are buying the whole job, the drywall cost guide has the combined rates.
